Two quotations for “a 25,000 litre tank” can differ widely in price, and often that is because the suppliers assumed different things. Giving a clear brief at the start saves time, avoids surprises and makes quotations easy to compare.

1. Product and capacity
State the fuel or liquid to be stored, such as petrol, diesel or kerosene, and the nominal capacity of each tank. If you need more than one grade in one tank, ask for a multi compartment tank and give the capacity of each compartment.
2. Construction
Specify single skin or double skin, and whether you need leak detection. If you have preferred diameters because of site space or transport limits, mention them. Common diameters range from 1250 mm to 3000 mm.
3. Standard and specification
Name the standard the tank must meet, for example BS EN 12285-1, and attach any client or oil company specification. This affects plate thickness, testing and documentation.
4. Coating and lining
Say which external coating you need, such as GRP, epoxy, polyurethane or bitumen, and whether an internal lining is required. Mention the ground conditions if they are aggressive, for example saline or waterlogged soil.
5. Fittings and accessories
List the openings and accessories: manways, fill and suction pipes, vent connections, overfill prevention valves, dipsticks, GRP access chambers and hold down straps.
6. Testing and documents
State the tests you expect, such as pressure testing of each skin and holiday testing of the coating, and whether a third party inspector will witness them. Ask for test certificates and a data book if your client needs them.
7. Delivery and installation
Give the delivery location and required date, and say whether the supplier should install the tank, including excavation, bedding, backfill and piping. For export, add the destination country, delivery terms and packing requirements.
