Quality & HSE

How Apex Engineers controls quality, tests tanks and coatings, documents inspections and manages health and safety on workshop and project sites.

Our Quality & HSE Practices

Quality you can check, safety you can see

Procurement teams and consultants need evidence, not slogans. This page explains how Apex Engineers controls quality in the manufacturing facility and on site, how we manage health and safety, and what documentation we provide. Project specific inspection and test plans, procedures and records are available on request.

Quality assurance

Quality controlled at every stage

Quality starts before the first cut. Each order is reviewed against the drawings, specification and agreed scope, and any gaps are raised with the client before fabrication begins. From there, checks are built into each stage of production rather than left to the end.

  • Contract and drawing review
  • Material identification on receipt
  • Dimensional checks after cutting and fit up
  • Weld visual inspection
  • Surface preparation checks before coating
  • Final inspection before dispatch

Non conformities are recorded, corrected and reviewed so that the same problem does not repeat on the next order.

Inspection, testing and documentation

Tests and records that go with the product

The tests carried out depend on the product and the project specification. For fuel storage tanks, for example, every tank is pressure tested pneumatically or hydrostatically, coatings are checked for thickness, and a 100% holiday test is carried out on the finished coating.

  • Inspection and test plans for projects
  • Material traceability where specified
  • Welding procedures and welder qualification where applicable
  • Pressure and leak testing
  • Coating thickness and holiday testing
  • Dimensional reports
  • Third party inspection by arrangement
  • Handover and as built documentation

Clients and third party inspectors are welcome to witness tests at our manufacturing facility. Radiography and other non destructive testing are arranged through qualified agencies when the specification requires them.

HSE practices

Health, safety and environment on every site

Our work involves heavy lifting, hot work, working at height and work next to live traffic and fuel. We plan for those risks before crews arrive on site and expect every person to stop work if something is unsafe.

  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Toolbox talks before work starts
  • Personal protective equipment for all staff
  • Permit to work for hot work and confined spaces
  • Traffic management on road projects
  • Lifting plans for cranes and heavy items
  • Housekeeping and waste control
  • Incident reporting and follow up

Where a client or main contractor has its own HSE rules, we follow them and brief our crews on them during site induction.

Certifications

Certifications and compliance

We follow the standards specified for each product and project, such as BS EN 12285-1 for underground fuel tanks. Where a project requires a specific certification, registration or code stamp, please mention it in your enquiry. We will confirm clearly whether we hold it, or how the requirement can be met, before you place an order.
